The Ancient Egyptian cartouche was a traditional device used for writing hieroglyphic names inside of. Its purpose was to distinguish the names of pharaohs from other, less important writings and hieroglyphics. The oval surrounding their name was meant to protect them from evil spirits in life and after death. Cartouches were formerly only worn by pharaohs, but overtime gained popularity for others. The cartouche has become a symbol representing good luck and protection from evil.
